review time april 2013 # 1

This time I won't show you a new figure, but a new camera. As I don't want to carry my huge and heavy Canon EOS 7D all the time, I decided to buy a second camera, which I can carry along more often. As system-cameras are getting more and more popular, it was a logic step to search in this segment. As a canon-fanboy I decided to try the Canon EOS M.

As I already read a few tests about the EOS M, I was not sure, if buying this one would be the best decision. The quality of the pictures is said to be really great, but a lot of people complained about the slow autofocus. However, this weekend it finally arrived and I could make my own conclusion.

The first thing to recognize was that it is really tiny compared to my 7D. The camera is completely made of metal, but its weight is quite low. What I don't like is the fact that it doesn't have a viewfinder, neither digital nor analog. Due to my opinion it is a bit like being a sniper shooting out of the hip. In opposite to the 7D the M uses SD-memorycards. A logical step, as the body is small and a CF-card would use much more space. I bought the set including an additional macro objective in addition to the normal 18-55mm one - quite good for miniature-photography. A flash is also included in the set.

Today I was able to test the camera the first time in action. I'm really happy about how it works. You have nearly as much possibilities as with the 7D. You can even shoot an exposure latitude to make HDR-pictures. The only thing you have to get used to is the touchscreen. I added some unphotoshopped pictures so that you can have a closer look.

My final conclusion is that it is not a cheap toy, but the Canon EOS M is worth its money. The DSLR has a faster autofocus - yes it is true - but the autofocus is really fast enough, except you want to make sport-pictures.

Even the dog was shot quite sharp, even while running:

  1. I would be interested how this camera performs in low light - for example if you want to take pictures of miniatures in a dimly lit display case. Would you be so kind as to do a little test for us? :)
